Environmental Technician
Federal Aviation Administration
Tuesday, December 2, 2025
The Environmental SSC has primary responsibility for the facility’s power systems. These systems include a dual-feed utility service supplied by two independent substations, a critical power bus supported by a pair of Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), and a standby power system consisting of two 1000-kW Kohler engine-generators. A fully integrated main switchgear ties these systems together. All components are automated and controlled by a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) with a graphical user interface.
This power system is considered a certifiable system, requiring technicians to attend approximately eight weeks of formal training at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City, followed by extensive On-the-Job Training (OJT) at the facility. Upon completion of OJT, technicians must pass a certification proficiency exam to obtain and retain certification.
In addition to power systems, Environmental SSC personnel maintain the facility’s HVAC infrastructure. This includes three 170-ton rooftop air-cooled liquid chillers, dry coolers, hot water boilers, multiple air handling units, fan coil units, and a variety of variable- and constant-air-volume units. The HVAC system is Direct Digital Control (DDC)–based and monitored through a PC interface.
Environmental technicians are also responsible for maintaining the fire alarm and suppression systems, the fuel storage and delivery system supporting the standby generators, pumps, motors, switchboards, transformers, interior and exterior lighting systems, general facility wiring, plumbing, structural components, and all road and grounds maintenance. They also assist other SSC personnel, support facility projects and modifications, and oversee contractor operations.
